Every-day nowhere in the world at any Astana such a large number of functions and ceremonies are performed as at the Holy Astana of Hazrat Khwaja Garib Nawaz and that too, in a highly traditional way and strictly in accordance with the Chishtiya precepts.
These spiritual programs are the source of earning, the blessings, pleasure and confidence of the Holy Saint and have proved beneficial for attainment of high spiritual ecstasy and bliss. Therefore, devotees in large number attend these functions and receive the blessings of the Holy Khwaja and feel enlightened. If these functions are attended with piety and devotion all the prayers which are made at those timings are sure to be granted.
The detailed description of these functions is given below.

  1. DAILY FUNCTION:

The daily functions and ceremonies which are observed round the clock with great punctually of time begin from early in the morning and continue till late in the evening, are as under:

  • KHIDMAT BEFORE FAZAR PRAYER:

About an hour before the 'Salat' of Fajar, Khadims of Khwaja Sahib gather in Begami Dalan with great respect & devotion. This Dalan is towards the East of the tomb and in this Dalan is the main entrance of the Mazar. At the fixed appropriate time Khadims stand near the 'Door' entrance.

 

The devotees also follow them and stand with them in a highly honoured manner. One of the Khadims recites 'AZAN', As soon as the Azan ends; the “Kalid Bardar” opens the lock and then the door. After entering into the tomb, they make themselves ready for 'Khidmat'. Some of the stand round the first enceinte of the Mazar (Grave) some enter in between the space of two enceintes and some enter in between the space of the Holy Mazar and the second enceinte.Now, they remove the flowers and Chadar from Mazar, clean the Mazar and its surroundings, offer new Chadar and fresh flowers. As soon as this particular ceremony ends, the Khadims standing in between the two ancients and outside the second enceinte start cleaning the floor with 'Farasha' (it is an special dust remover made of Peacock feathers).the southern door of the tomb is opened for devotees to enter into the tomb and sit silently in the open space near the tomb of Hazrat Bibi Hafiza Jamal daughter of Khwaja Garib Nawaz (R.A.).   
This Duty ends before the call of Azaan for Salat of Fajar. This time is important for offering prayers. Prayers made at this time are sure to be granted.

  1. KHIDMAT AFTER THE ZOHAR PRAYER :

Daily after an hour of Zohar prayer generally at 3 P.M. another duty which is also known as Khidmat is performed. At this time, though the doors of the tomb are closed, yet, the southern door, though apparently remains closed, is used for entrance into the tomb.
At the time of this duty, devotees are permitted to enter the tomb; they are allowed to keep standing silently in between the space of the walls of the tomb and the enceinte of the Mazar.
At this time in presence of the devotees, after removal of the already presented flowers, chadar. Khadims perform this Duty. Fresh flowers are presented on the Mazar, if needed, the chadar is also changed, and after that the floor of the tomb is cleaned in the traditional way.
Ladies are not permitted to enter the tomb during the entire period of this duty.

  1. LIGHTNING OR DANKA (ROSHNI) :

Every day about 20 minutes before Maghrib prayer the ceremony of lighting is held. The way in which this ceremony is performed is that some Khadims bring candles (specially prepared for this purpose) in their hands from a Hujra (cell or room) near Chhoti Deg. As soon as from Chhoti Deg they start moving towards the Holy Tomb drums are beaten. This Roshni is written by Hazrat Khwaja Hussain Ajmeri R.A., tenth sajjadanashin of Khwaja Sahib and this ceremony was started in his lifetime.
Khadims after touching the candles with the heads of the devotees who keep standing on either side of the way reach inside the tombs with of blessing for devotees on their lips. They place those candles in the lamps. The unlighted candles are now lighted. The lamps in which the candles are placed are four in number. The Khadims hold those lamps in their hands and keep them above their heads. One of them recites some Persian verses (Roshni) in the glory of the Holy Saint. With the end of those verses the people disburse and the lamps are placed in four corners of the Holy Tomb.
In the local language this ceremony is called 'Danka'.

  1.  KADKA:

This last ceremony of the day is popularly known as 'Kadka' and is performed in highly significant and traditional way. This is held after about 1 ½ hour of Isha prayer. After this ceremony the door of the main entrance into the Holy tomb is closed and locked.
According to the old tradition, about 20 minutes before closing the main entrance of the Holy Tomb, at a time when about one fifth part of the night had passed, a person loudly calls to ring five and with his voice the clock sounds five times. The Khadims ready to cleaning the floor of tombs, this duties request the devotees to vacate the tomb, the devotees come out of the tomb and stand on either side of the entrance in a queue. The Khadims then close the other doors from inside and make a search inside the entire tomb to see that there is now no one inside the tomb. After that they start their usual service, at least three Khadims join in this service. They clean the floor surroundings of the Mazar.  They come out of the tomb one by one with the sand and dusts of the floor kept in a fine cloth and keep the same in a shelf inside Sandal-Masjid.   
When the third and the last Khadim comes out, a person duly appointed, again calls in a loud voice to ring six bells. The bell sounds six times. As soon as the voice of the sixth bell sounds, the Qawwali, who stands there ready, start to sing a special song in some old Indian language which is called Kadka. As soon as the last verse of the Kadka is recited, the main entrance of the tomb is closed and locked. The Khadim on duty keeps the key with him and also keeps a watch round the tomb throughout the night.

  1. WEEKLY FUNCTION:

On every Thursday after Isha prayer called “Mehfil-e-Jumerat” is organized inside Ahata-e-Noor opposite Begami Dalan. This ceremony is started by Khwaja sahib during his lifetime on every Thursday. This ceremony start with 'Fateha' and distribute “Tabarrukat “ (Sandal and Sweet). The Mehfil started by the permission of great Grandson and hereditary Sajjadanashin Sahib and Qawwal presenting Salam to standing alert, and then start the Qawwali till the closer of holy tombs. At last ends with Fateha. All these activities and duties like Fateha, Tabarrukat Distribution, Chobdary held by the hereditary staff of Dargah.
People in large number attend this ceremony. This religious ceremony is preside by the Holy Sajjadanashin Sahib (Dewan Sahib) during the mehfil devotees giving offering to Sajjadanashin Sahib and take blessing to them. All this offering has given to the qawwal through the chobdar, by the Sajjadanashin Sahib.  The chobdar’s were standing on both side (Left and Right along with Silver Stick in hand)
During the mehfil, Chobdar taking permission to Sajjadanashin sahib for ringing to ring five and with his voice the clock sounds five times. At the end of mehfil, Fatehakhwan recite the fateha and dua for the Salamati of Sajjadanashin sb along with their brothers, sons and all the devotees. After that the chobdar loudly call for six rings and qawwal started the Kadka loudly and tombs are closed by the Khadim-on-Duty.

  1. MONTHLY FUNCTION:

1. FATEHA CHHATTI SHARIF:
On every sixth of Lunar Month the famous and highly inspiring ceremony of Fateha Chhatti Sharif is celebrated within Ahata-e-Noor in front of Begami Dalan after the Isha-Prayer. This ceremony starts with ‘Fateha’ and distributes “Tabbarruk “(Sweet). The Mehfil started by the permission of Sajjadanashin Sahib and Qawwal presenting Salam to standing alert, and then start the Qawwali till the closer of holy tombs. All these activities and duties like Fateha, Tabarrukat Distribution, Chobdary held by the hereditary staff of Dargah.
People in large number attend this ceremony. This religious ceremony is preside by the Holy Sajjadanashin Sahib (Dewan sahib), during the mehfil devotees giving offering to Sajjadanashin Sahib and take blessing to them. All this offering has given to the qawwal through the chobdar, by the Sajjadanashin Sahib.
During the mehfil, Chobdar taking permission to sajjadanashin sahib for ringing to ring five and with his voice the clock sounds five times. At the end of the mehfil, the chobdar loudly call for six rings and qawwal started the Kadka loudly and tomb is closed by the Khadim-on-Duty.

2.  Fateha of Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (R.A.):


On every 14th of Islamic month Fateha of Hazrat Khwaja Qutubuddin Bakhtiar-kaki (R.A.), the first spiritual successor, of Khwaja Sahib whose holy Tombi sat Mahroli-Delhi, is performed between Asar and Maghrib prayer at his own Chilla which is situated at the bank of Ana-Sagar Lake. The ceremony presides by the Sajjadanashin Sahib.
  1. ANNUAL FUNCTION:

Throughout the year, several religious, spiritual ceremonies are organized and observed at the Holy Astana of Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz R.A. at a large and magnificent scaling. These programs are performed in accordance with Islamic Calendar and their detailed are as:

  1. URS of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chishty R.A.:

The URS of Khwaja Garib Nawaz R.A. is celebrating in the Islamic month of 1st to 6th Rajab. Lacs of pilgrims are participating from all over the world in these days. The religious ceremonies are started from the “Chandrat” (Appearing the moon of Rajab month). The following ceremonies are presiding by the holy Sajjadanashin Sahib, their details are as:
URS CEREMONY

The URS Ceremony of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chishty R.A. has been performing In the Islamic month of ‘Rajab”, and start from the Chandrat (at appearance of the moon in the sky). This ceremony has been celebrating from 1st to 6th Rajab. Shadiyane (Drums) are beating in the Dargah premises at Buland Darwaja,  since moon appearing. This is the symbol of starting the URS ceremony.

The daily functions and ceremonies are change at that time, which are generally held at the Holy Dargah.  The main entrance of the Holy Tomb is kept open throughout the day and night except 2 or 3 hours in night during all six days of URS ceremony. The Jannati Darwaja also keeps open whole six days. All other daily and weekly program is suspended and few functions and ceremonies commence from Chandrat, which details are as:

  1. CHANDRAT:

 

Shadiyane (Drums) are beating in the Dargah premises at Buland Darwaja since moon appearing in the sky, this is the symbol of starting the URS ceremony. After ISHA Prayer, The Hereditary staffs of Dargah Sharif are coming along with Mashals and Candle Lamps at Sajjadanashin Sahib Haveli to receive the Sajjadanashin Sahib for presiding the URS Ceremonies. Than Sajjadanashin Sahib wear the Chishtiya Jubbah Mubarak (Kesariya or light orange colour) and ready to go with them along with their successor and other family members.

In front, the Mashalchi (Mashal People) and Candle lamp people, then the Hereditary staff of Dargah Sharif are going to Khankah of Hazrat Garib Nawaz along with holy Sajjadanashin sahib. Firstly the Sajjadanashin Sahib goes to Khanqah (situated behind the Mehfil-khana) of Hazrat Khwaja Garib Nawaz R.A. and seat on the separate Gaddi in Khankah nearer the GADDI of Hazrat Khwaja Garib Nawaz R.A., till the Hereditary staff has been informing the readiness of Mehfil-khana. This separate Gaddi is placed their till the last Qul-Rasm.

 

  1. Mehfil-khana:

The Mehfil-khana has been fully decorated like to be a Durbar of Emperor. The Hereditary staff people were coming at Khankah and request to Sajjadanashin Sahib to come in Mehfil-khana. The Sajjadanashin Sahib arrive and seat on Special Seat (called Gaddi) under the Shamiyana (Special tent) in the center of Mehfil-khana front side. Then, The Hereditary staff  people place DastarKhwan (Dining table cloth) in front of Sajjadanashin and place the Tabarrukat (Sweets) of Batasha. Then, The Fatehakhwan recite the Fateha.

After that, the Chobdar introducing the first and second choki of Qawwal’s. And the Qawwal’s are made Salam to Sajjadanashin sahib. The Tabarrukat has been distribute first to Sajjadanashin sahib, than those people who seat nearer the Sajjadanashin sahib, than Qawwal parties and others. After that the Qawwal starts Qawwali, and these Sufi Qalam’s of Qawwali are proceeding full night. All India famous Qawwal’s are coming from famous Dargah and Khanqah to recite qawwalies.

Only those qawwal parties are recite their Qalam, who’s having permission of Sajjadanashin sahib. The qawwal parties were grant permission priorly by given their name and information in the register at Sajjadanashin Haveli. Then Sajjadanashin Sahib make a list of qawwal parties according to their sequence.

In between the Mehfil, the hereditary staffs are come and give information about the cleaning of Mazar (Like Removing of Flowers, Chadar’s and cleaning of Mazar of Hazrat Garib Nawaz R.A.) and invite to Sajjadanashin sahib for Rasm-e-Gusl.

  1. Rasm-e-Gusl:

 

After complete preparation of Gusl ceremony in the holy Mazar (Shrine), The Hereditary staff  come and reporting about the preparation and request to Sajjadanashin Sahib for Rasm-e-Gusl. Than Sajjadanashin Sahib go with them inside the tomb by the way of “Jannati Darwaja”, and change the Chishtiya Jubbah Mubarak with Sufiyana Jubbah Mubarak (in White colour) and go inside the shrine. At that time the Astana of Shrine is leaved by others. There are only seven Haft-ChokiBaridar (Khadim or their nominator); two police officers and One Bhishti (Water Supplier People) are there inside the Tomb along with Sajjadanashin Sahib and their nominators. Only these people are permissible in the tomb at the time of Rasm-e-Gusl. Now the Holy Mazar closed and Sajjadanashin Sahib start the Gusl by their both hands. Two Haft-ChokiBaridar pour the water and Remains all are standing on other side of the Astana and giving the materials for Gusl ceremony.

The holy Sajjadanashin Sahib himself gives Gusl to Mazar and paste the Sandal on Astana-Mazar. Than Sajjadanashin Sahib placed the Chadar sharif and do Gulposhi (Flowers of Gulab) on Mazar.

This Rasm-e-Gusl is made by only and only Sajjadanashin Sahib and these process are still in force since a long ago (Mugal Emperor periods). This Rasm-e-Gusl is doing continuously from Chandrat to 5th Rajab daily.

After that the holy Sajjadanashin Sahib change the Sufiyana Jubbah Mubarak and again wear Chishtiya Jubbah Mubarak and return to Mehfil-khana. Whenever Sajjadanashin arrive in Mehfil-khana, then serve tea first to Sajjadanashin then serve to others who are in Mehfil-khana.

In the end of Mehfil made Fatehakhwani and distribute Tabarrukat like Sharbat, Sandal and Pan. This Mehfil has been finished before the prayer of Fazar.

 

 

  1. Mehfil-e-Khankah:

 

On 5th Rajab, The Mehfil held in Khankah of Hazrat Garib Nawaz R.A. after the Johar Prayer (at 2.00 P.M.). Where all the Sajjadanashin of others Dargah of India, Sufi’s and Pilgrims are participate in this Mehfil. The Qawwal parties are reciting Sufi Qawwalies and their Khankah-Qalam’s.  The Namaz-e-Asar held with Zamat in Khankah. After that Fatehakhwani made by Fatehakhwan and distribute Tabarrukat to all of them. Than all Sajjadanashin of other Dargah, Sufi’s and Jaireen given “Nazrana-e Akidat” to The holy Sajjadanashin Hazrat Zainul Abedin Ali Khan Sahib.

 

  1. Qul-Day:

The Qul ceremony are held on the 6th Rajab, this day is very important and the last day of URS. This ceremony starts from 9:00 A.M. in the morning at Mehfil-khana, with Quran-Khwani (the recitation of Quran Mazid). The Holy Sajjadanashin Hazrat Zainul Abedin Ali Khan Sahib arrive in Mehfil-khana at 11:00 A.M. and recite One Ruku of Quran Mazid, then the Rasm of Qul in proceed. The Qawwal parties recite the Qalam’s, then recite Rang (Special Qalam of Qul), after that  they recite Badhawa(Sufi Qalam). Then Fatehakhwan made Fatehakhwani and The Hereditary staff people made Dastarbandi (Wear Pagdi on the Head) to the Sajjadanashin Sahib in their respect.

 After that  The Sajjadanashin Sahib go with Hereditary staff in the Holy Shrine of Hazrat Garib Nawaz R.A. and Seat Nearer the Head side of Mazar (Sirhane)and recite Fateha of Qul and deemed Dua of  the Pleasant, Health, Wealth for all of the people, who are attend or who are live on the earth. Then Sajjadanashin Sahib returns to Mehfil-khana by the way of Begami-Dalan. Then Sajjadanashin sahib made Dastarbandi of Hereditary staff and return to their parental Haveli. In Haveli, the Sajjadanashin sahib has given Gift to Hereditary staff and made Dastarbandi of Jaireen’s. After that the Sajjadanashin sahib made Langar (Special food) to all the people who are there in Haveli and then see off to all.

  1. Annual URS of Hazrat Khwaja Usman Harwani (R.A.),The peer-o-Murshid (Spiritual Master) of Khwaja Garib Nawaz (R.A.):

The spiritual ceremonies of this function are organized on 5th and 6th of Shawal. People from far and near coming to attend the program and obtain those special bounties and blessings of Hazrat Khwaja Garib Nawaz which are bestowed upon devotees during those days. The ceremony presides by the Sajjadanashin Sahib, like Urs ceremony of Hazrat Khwaja Garib Nawaz (R.A.).

  1.  Annual URS of Hazrat Khwaja Qutbuddin- Bakhtiyar Kaki (R.A.):

On 14th of this month, the Annual URS of Hazrat Khwaja Qutubuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (R.A.), who was the first spiritual successor of Hazrat Khwaja Garib Nawaz R.A. is celebrate at his Chilla-Sharif, which is situated at Daulat Bagh, near Ana Sagar Lake. The ceremony preside by the Sajjadanashin Sahib.

  1. Annual URS of Hazrat Khwaja Fakhruddin Chishty Mandalvi (R.A.):

Hazrat Khwaja Fakhruddin R.A. is the eldest son of Hazrat Khwaja Garib Nawaz R.A. He spends his life in prayers and meditation at village “MANDAL” Dist. Bhilwara (Rajasthan). about 130 k.m. from Ajmer and breathed his last in the same village. Their annual URS is celebrate from 4th  to5th Shaban. The Sajjadanashin Sahib of Hazrat Khwaja Sahib preside over the URS ceremonies at their tomb  Mandal; all the ceremonies of URS including 'Langar' are organized by Anjuman of the said tomb.

  1.  Annual URS of Hazrat Khwaja Husamuddin Chishty Jigar Sokhta  (R.A.) :

The annual URS of Hazrat Khwaja Husamuddin Chishty Jigar Sokhta, who was the grandson of Hazrat Khwaja Garib Nawaz R.A., is celebrating from 11th to 14th of this month by Sajjadanashin Sahib of Hazrat Khwaja Garib Nawaz R.A. at “SAMBHER”. Their Mazar is situated  in SAMBHER (a place about 90 K.M. from Ajmer). All the religious ceremony presides by the Sajjadanashin Sahib.

  1. Eid-Milad-un-Nabi:-

This ceremony is being celebrate on 11th rabi-ul-awwal  Islamic month at Ata-e-Noor after Isha-Prayer. This ceremony start with 'Fateha' and distribute “Tabbarruk “(Sandal and Sweet). The Mehfil started by the permission of Sajjadanashin Sahib and Qawwal presenting Salam to standing alert, Then start the Qawwali till the closer of holy tombs. At last ends with Fateha. All these activities and duties like Fateha, Tabarrukat Distribution, Chobdary held by the hereditary staff of Dargah (Amla).
People in large number attend this ceremony. This religious ceremony is presiding by the Holy Sajjadanashin Sahib (Dewan sahib) during the mehfil devotees giving offering to Sajjadanashin Sahib and take blessing to them. All this offering has given to the qawwal through the chobdar, by the Sajjadanashin Sahib.  The chobdar’s were standining on both side (Left and Right with Gold Stick).
During the mehfil, Chobdar taking permission to Sajjadanashin Sahib for ringing to ring five times and with his voice the clock sounds five times. At the end of mehfil Fatehakhwan recite the fateha and dua for the Salamati of Sajjadanashin Sahib along with their brothers, sons and all the devotees, Zaireens. After that the chobdar loudly call for six rings, the drum were beating at Nakar-khana and qawwal started the Kadka loudly and tombs are closed by the Khadim-on-Duty.

  1. Basant Panchmi:-

This ceremony is showing the communal harmony and Ganga-Jamni Tehjib of our country, because This ceremony starting from the period of Hazrat Khwaja Nizamuddin Aulia R.A., by his Khas-Khalifa of his holyness. When Hazrat Khwaja Nizamuddin Aulia R.A.was in dipression after the death of their nephew, he spent his time in his Huzra and don’t meet with anyone, during these days Hazrat Amir Khusro R.A. was on the tour and he saw the Hindu Pilgrims sung a song and bring Basanti Flower. HAzrat Amir Khusro asked to them:
“ Why you sung this song and where you are you  going”
ThanThey reply, Today is the basant Panchmi, and they present the flower to their god to made him delighted. Hazrat Amir Khusro was impressed to heard them and implement this idea on his Peer-o-Murshid (Spiritual Master) Hazrat Khwaja Nizamuddin Aulia R.A . He wrote the basanti song and brings the flowers of these seasons and directly went to their Peer-o-Murshid Huzra and sung that basanti song. When Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia R.A. heard the voice of Hazrat Amir Khusro, suddenly he came out from Huzra and huge to Hazrat Amir Khusro. Since that day this ceremony are in order in all chishtiya Khankah’s  
This ceremony is celebrating in the month of Magh (Hindi Sanwat) 5th of looner month. The qawwal on this day were bring the buckey of yellow flowers and sung the basanti songs started from the Nizam gate of Dargah sharif to gumbad sharif of holy tomb. These ceremonies are presiding by the holy Sajjadanashin Sahib, Pilgrims are presenting Nazrana to the Sajjadanashin Sahib and they sent to qawwal through the chobdar.
